Movement and Mathematics

The resources for mathematics and physical education are phenomenal on eMediaVA.org. There are also numerous resources for combining movement and mathematics. This includes instructional videos for teachers and students as well as adaptable lesson plans. Although resources have recommended grade levels, educators can adjust the plans to fit the needs of their own classrooms. These activities can be quick and provide movement breaks. Below are 10 resources that can be used for educators to bring movement to their math classrooms.

  1. Musical Math Facts is a lesson plan that explains how students can strengthen mental math skills. The teacher holds up a math fact equation and exercise card. Once they solve the equation they complete that amount of the exercise.

  1. Musical Math Facts is a video modeling how to complete the lesson plan. The cards are shown on the screen with the movement and students can solve to figure out how many of the exercises to complete. There is also a child modeling the motion on the screen. Students in class could play along.

  1. Uno Fitness is a lesson plan that intertwines physical fitness with uno cards. The uno cards color indicates a specific exercise. The number on the uno card determines the amount of the exercise. Uno cards are used throughout mathematics classes with a variety of games. This lesson can be linked into activities already used in the classroom.

  1. UNO fitness video to show students how to complete the activity or can be played within the classroom for students to complete while following along the video.
  1. Math and Movement: Patterns is a video that explains how to include movement with practice of patterns. The teacher uses colored dots and connects each individual color to its own small motion. For example, she created a pattern with 2 purple dots and 2 red dots. When she stood on the purple dots she did arm circles and on the red dots she did squats.

  1. Pattern Party Workshop with Deb is another video in which Deb leads students through exploration of patterns with dance moves. The dance moves are chosen at random and become choreography.

  1. True or False Multiplication is a video in which an educator assigns an exercise to represent truth and a different one to represent false. The students are presented with a solved equation. Depending if the solution is true or false the class completes the assigned movement.

  1. In the video, Math at Physical Therapy, a physical therapist explains how she uses math in her career. Students could explore stretches and little movements while discussing angles and rotations.

  1. Time to Move is a video in which an educator explores telling time on an analog and digital clock then students complete exercise after answering questions. Two children model the movement.

  1. Multiples and Movement incorporates the aerobic movement with multiplication. This video focuses on multiplication on a numberline to emphasize the jumps for skip counting. However it can be adapted for different math skills including division, addition and subtraction.

Enjoy the movement!
